Sabudana Pancake | Thalipeeth | Fritters | Chila

Sabudana Pancake | Thalipeeth or fritters or chila is a vegetarian and a gluten free guilt free pancake made using Tapioca Pearls and is perfect for Indian fasting season.

Sabudana Pancake / Fritters / Chila

I love Sabudana Vada, but since it is deep fried, I do not prefer to make it too frequently. Instead of Vada I make this Sabudana PanCake or Sabudana Fritter’s – a non fried version of the vada’s, which can be enjoyed guilt free.

I can say the dish was a bit of my discovery. I love sabudana and to enjoy them I needed a healthier option of making them. Yes I know you must be thinking I am boasting. But when I made this dish I never knew sabudana thalipeeth existed. Only later I came to know about it.

So one day I tried the pancake version.  It is a gluten free and a nutritious snack, and made just like flatbread’s. Soaked sabudana along with potatoes and roasted crushed peanuts(optional) is mixed together and divided into equal size balls. Then pat them directly on a pan or a griddle and shallow fry. We enjoy this with Singdana Raita (Peanut Yogurt dip) which is equally yum.

Soaking Sabudana

The key to making this Sabudana pancakes or Sabudana Vada is to soak the sabudana properly. What I follow is wash the sabudana properly in clean water for 2-3 times. Then I soak them in enough water, leaving 1 cm water above the sabudana. Let this soak for an hour. Then I remove all the excess water leaving little behind. Give this a rough mix with my hand and then let this soak overnight or minimum for 8 hours.
