Amla Dhaniya Chutney | Indian Gooseberry & Coriander Chutney

Amla Dhaniya Chutney is a simple and delicious chutney loaded with the goodness of Amla , The Indian GooseBerry. This Chutney has the slight tanginess and the freshness from Amla. It is one of the best ways to incorporate Amla in your daily diet.

Amla, The Indian Gooseberry is sour, bitter and fibrous. Used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. They are a nutrient hub and low in calories. Many of the nutrients in these berries have been linked to significant health benefits. More can be found here.

Consuming Amla

It is best to eat this fresh. One can eat this as a healthy snack on their own. A common way to eat them is raw. Being tart to make it palatable a common way to eat is with some salt and red chilli powder. 

Indian Cuisines have a lot of recipes using Amla. One of the very common is Amla murrabba, Amla Juice and Amla Candies. Not to forget the Chyawanprash, where it is the primary ingredient.  Linked to be helpful in a lot of diseases. It is also used to make shampoos and hair oils.

Being sour in taste, this gem is not appreciated, especially with the kids. I would say even elders. I am one of them. My mom used to make me eat daily one Amla Murraba, and I use to find excuses to skip it. Though I love the Amla Candies mom made, I did not like any other thing of it. So I thought of making something from this, which me and everyone can eat happily.

One such ingredient is the chutney. If made the right way and suitable to your taste, you love it. It goes perfect as a side or as a spread. Good quality and fresh Amla are juicy but sour in taste. I thought to balance this out with a bit of sugar and salt. To enhance the taste further I added coriander, green chillies and ginger. One can add garlic too, but I skipped it. You do not need any lemon/lime in this Chutney as the Amla itself is sour.

Taste of Amla Dhaniya Chutney

I have made this chutney a bit hot, but one can adjust it as per  the taste. I was apprehensive of the taste, but the Amla bought the real freshness. The chutney turned out be a sour with a hint of mild sweetness. The chutney was light, fresh, spicy and a perfect spread to breads, rotis and even went well with chilas, dosas and Idlis

The first day I enjoyed this with my open tomato sandwich using Sprouted Wheat Flour No Knead Bread and the next few days I was finding an excuse to eat it. I used it as a side and as an accompaniment to my chilas, dosas and idlis.

Storing Amla Dhaniya Chutney

This Chutney stays fresh for 10-15 days on refrigeration. One can even freeze this in ice cube trays and use as required. There is really no specific measurements to this recipe, but jotting down what I used below.

I am sharing this recipe with our Foodie Monday Bloghop group where this week the #231 theme was #CondimentsMagic. I suggested this theme, as I wanted to create some delicious and lip smacking condiments, where we use unusual or ingredients which are not everyone’s favourite. The logic was to make everyone enjoy the food which they do not like.


So here goes the recipe for Amla Dhaniya Chutney:

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Deseeded and chopped Amla(Indian Gooseberry)
  • ¾ Cup Roughly Chopped Coriander
  • 2-3 Green Chillies (As per taste)
  • ½ Teaspoon of Asafoetida (Hing) (**for Gluten free, Please see notes)
  • ½ inch Ginger piece (Adrak)
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar

Preparation

  1. Wash, deseed and roughly chop the Amla into smaller pieces.
  2. Add in all the remaining ingredients along with Alma in a blender or a mixer grinder.
  3. Grind it into a fine smooth paste.
  4. Store in Fridge for 8-10 days or in the freezer for months. 

Notes

  • 1 Cup = 235 ml, 1 tbsp= 15 ml, 1 tsp = 5 ml
  • Asafoetida (Hing) powder available in shops contains wheat and is not gluten free. Gluten intolerant people can either skip completely or opt for Gluten Free Asafoetida (Hing)
