How to make Mashed Potatoes (Without Butter or oil)

Making homemade mashed potatoes from scratch is super easy and quick. It can be done in as little as 30 minutes from start to finish. Learn the tips and tricks here.

Ingredients

  • 6-7 1kg medium size potatoes
  • 1.5 cup Milk
  • Salt
  • Pepper to taste
  • Water for boiling the potatoes

Instructions

Cooking potatoes in Instant Pot or Pressure cooker

  • Scrub and rinse the potatoes to remove any excess dirt.

  • If cooking potatoes in an instant pot or pressure cooker, add 2 cups of water to the inner vessel.

  • Place a trivet down.

  • Keep a steel plate at the bottom, this helps the potatoes not soaking in water.
  • Add in the potatoes and pressure cook it for 10-12 minutes on high.
  • If using a stovetop pressure cooker, pressure cook to 3-4 whistles depending on your pressure cooker settings.
  • Once the pressure has been released, remove the potatoes and let them cool down a bit.

  • Peel and mash them roughly.

  • Scrub and rinse the potatoes to remove any excess dirt.
    6-7 1kg medium size potatoes
  • Peel the potatoes.
  • Cut them into cubes.
  • Add sufficient water to an open pot.

  • Add in the potatoes and some salt and bring the water to a boil.
  • Let them cook for 10-15 minutes.
  • They are done when you insert a knife or a fork and it pierces inside without any resistance.
  • Switch off and drain all the excess water using a colander.
  • Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or using the back of a spoon.

Making of the Mash

  • In a heavy bottom, add the milk.
    1.5 cup Milk
    Milk and Butter to a pot.
  • Once the milk is slightly warm, add the mashed potatoes, salt, and pepper.

  • Gently mix everything and let the mixture come to a boil.
  • Keep on stirring the mixture until all is well combined and the milk is all absorbed by the potatoes.

  • Switch off and garnish with pepper or herbs.

Notes

  • Standard US Size cups and spoons are used. 1 cup = 237 ml, 1 teaspoon = 5 ml
  • Some potatoes may absorb more liquid, in that case, feel free to increase the milk quantity.
  • One can add butter and cheese to make it more rich. (Vegans can use vegan butter)
