Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Buckwheat groat
  • 1 Medium potato (peeled and cubed)
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee/Clarified Butter (One can use oil too)
  • 1 1/4 Cup Water
  • 1/2 Cup roasted (shelled and coarsely chopped peanuts)
  • 1/2 Chopped fresh coriander
  • 1/2 Cup Chopped fresh mint
  • 2-3 green chilies finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated ginger (or ginger paste)
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (Til)
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon clove powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 1-2 tablespoon lemon juice (depending on taste)
  • Sendha Namak (Rock salt or normal salt to taste)

Instructions

  • Rinse and wash the Buckwheat groat in water.
  • Add water and let it soak for 30-60 minutes.
  • In a pot, add 1 cup water and the soaked buckwheat groat.
  • Add salt and let the Buckwheat groat cook over medium heat.
  • It will take around 10-15 minutes.
  • To check gently crush 1-2 groats between your hand, it should crush smoothly.
  • Do not overcook or else the khichdi will go mushy.
  • Remove the cooked buckwheat into a plate or a colander and spread it out.
  • Let this cool down completely.
  • In the mean time, create a paste of coriander and mint or finely chop them.
  • I have not added any water, as I did it in a food processor.
  • If you are making a paste and adding water add as little as you can.
  • In a pan add gheeoil over medium heat.
  • Once hot, add cumin seeds and sesame seeds.
  • When the seeds pop, add curry leaves, green chillies, finely grated ginger and give it a quick mix.
  • Add the chopped potato, very little salt and let the potatoes cook.
  • You might need to add some water (the remaining 1/4 cup) to help the potatoes cook.
  • Once the potatoes are done, add the chopped peanuts.
  • Add the chopped mint and coriander and mix well.
  • Now add the coriander powder, clove powder, sugar and mix well.
  • Add the buckwheat groat and lemon juice.

  • Mix everything well but gently. We do not want the groats to get mushy.
  • Let this cook for 4-5 minutes, mixing occasionally.
  • Serve it as is or with some yogurt.
  • Now add the coriander powder, clove powder, sugar and mix well.
  • Add the buckwheat groat and lemon juice.
  • Mix everything well but gently, as we do not want the groats to get mushy.
  • Let this cook for 4-5 minutes, mixing occasionally.
  • Serve it as is or with some yogurt.
