New month new recipes new challenges, and this week I am starting with recipes from Greece, with my BM group. I have a ton of recipes to try from Greece and it was difficult to choose. Though I was tempted to make some of it’s famous desserts I decided to opt for a bit of healthier option and I would be sharing 3 healthy recipes for the next three day, starting with this Greek Salad (Horiatiki / Xoriatiki).
I love the simplicity of this dish with simple veggies and the humble Feta Cheese. Feta Cheese is a brined curd made in Greece from sheep’s milk or a mixture of Sheep’s and Goats milk. It is a crumbly ages cheese, rich in proteins and calcium and has a slight grainy texture. I would say it has a sharp taste as compared to our Indian Cottage cheese (Paneer), but it adds a lovely texture and taste to the dish being added.
Greek salad uses common ingredients generally available at home. Be sure to use fresh vegetable as much as possible to give it the perfect taste. That is Juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumber and creamy feta cheese and good quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Traditionally black olives are used, but I used the green ones as I had them. Rest the recipe can be assembled in 5-10 minutes and is quite filling due to the addition of Feta Cheese. I have added lettuce only to give a base to my salad. I have adapted the recipe from here
Ingredients
- 2 Medium Size Tomatoes, Cut into Wedges
- 1/2 Medium Red Onion, Cut length wise or into rings
- 1/2 Cucumber (6 inches), peeled and sliced into half moons
- 1/2 Green Peeper, Cut length wise
- 8-9 Olives (I used green, traditionally Black are used)
- 100 gm Feta Cheese (Block or cut into cubes)
- 1/2 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar
- 2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1/2 teaspoon Dried Oregano
- Salt to taste
Preparation
- Start by preparing your vegetables. Wash the vegetables thoroughly and strain.
- Cut the tomatoes, Pepper’s and Slice the onion’s.
- Peel and cut the cucumber and place everything in a large bowl.
- Add the olives, vinegar, oil, oregano and salt. Go easy on salt as Feta Cheese has salt in it.
- Give everything a quick mix.
- Now Traditionally the block of feta cheese is placed on top with a drizzle of Olive oil and a sprinkle of Oregano.
- I have cut into cubes and gave it a mix in my salad.
- Enjoy it as is or with some crusty bread on the side.

I just had this kind of salad today. Its so delicious crunchiness from the cucumber and onion, saltiness from feta and olives and a lovely aroma from oregano.
