I am here again with another healthy and delicious recipe with Horse Gram aka Kulith one of the healthiest beans. Horse Gram and Sweet Potato Patties aka Kulith and Shakarkand ki Tikki is a delicious snack that can be enjoyed as is or a patties for your burger. They can be served for your kiddo’s parties as well as for their lunch box.
Horse Gram or Kulith the main Ingredient
Horse Gram or Kulith or Kulthi bean or Madras gram is one of the lesser known beans. It is relatively new to my kitchen, but I have already created different recipes with this. I have already shared earlier this healthy salad using kultih, Sprouted Horse gram (Kulith) Salad . I have some healthy recipes coming your way using kulith. So keep watching this space for more.
Sweet Potato the second main Ingredient
The second main ingredient in this recipe is Sweet Potato aka Shakarkand. Sweet potato is available abundantly in winters in India and in fall and winters in Europe. This root vegetable has a 50-50 percentage chances of being in good books of kids. As a kid I used to love this roasted with some lemon and chaat masala sprinkled on it. But I am sure my son will not like this.
So sneaking in comes to the rescue. I have earlier made this Sweet Potato Bread and also Whole Wheat Sweet Potato and Chocolate Pancakes where sweet potato is completely hidden. So this time it was the time to incorporate this seasonal vegetable as a binding in this Horse Gram and Sweet Potato Patties.
So when Aruna from Vasusvegkitchen asked us to make a snack using any lentils, legumes or beans for our #223 CrunchyMunchDal theme of Foodie Monday, I decided to use Horse Gram as my main ingredient.
Horse Gram and Sweet Potato Patties Recipe
I simply made what I felt like and did not follow any recipe at all. I soaked and boiled the horse gram. Added a bit of onion, garlic, few spices and sweet potato as the binding ingredient. Generally potato is being added for such Patties, but I thought of incorporating something that is in season and difficult to feed. Sweet potato adds a wonderful texture and taste to the dish. I have added all the spices loosely as per my taste. Also this is a bit more spicy. But if you are just making for the kids, do reduce it or adjust as per your taste. I have also added some leftover homemade bread crumbs to give it a binding. All in all, the dish turned out perfect and I enjoyed it with some Tripura Tomato Chutney.
Horse Gram is available in Asian shops or you can order it online on amazon. If not available one can replace it with another lentil/dal or bean too.

Renu love how you include the healthy horse gram in your cooking. I still have to get some and use it in my kitchen. Making patties with them sounds like a good idea. They look so delicious and so so crunchy.
