Another post from Food Blogger Recipe Swap Club and coincidentally I have chosen Ragi again as the star for this dish. I made this Instant Ragi Idli for my previous swap which is a hit in my house. Hence this time I decided to make this Ragi Banana and Dates Smoothie. This does not have any form of sugar and I can say it is a healthy, filling, and quick energy drink.
So what is Ragi?
Ragi is a gluten-free flour and is extensively used in Indian cooking. There are many different recipes using Ragi. I have detailed more about what Ragi is in my earlier post about Instant Ragi Dosa. Though I have not experimented with this flour or grain a lot I have started to use it more and more over the past few years. There are various health benefits of this flour. It keeps you full for a longer duration and hence a good weight loss food.
While searching for recipes for Ragi, I came across drinks made using Ragi. I was curious about the taste of the Ragi drink. The color and the texture of Ragi puts one off at times. But do not do that to this wonderful gem, use it and you will love it.
For this month’s swap, I was paired with Ashima Goyal who blogs at My Weekend Kitchen. I decided to make a healthy Ragi and Banana Smoothie. Do check out Ashima’s blog for a wonderful collection of healthy recipes.
As you know, I am always on the lookout for some healthy filling bites. Hence I decided to make this Ragi Banana and Dates Smoothie which is a very simple, fuss-free, and easy recipe to make for your breakfast or brunch. Since it was my first time making a drink with Ragi, I just made it for myself and it turned out to be the yummiest sugar-free smoothie I ever had.
The main point to remember in this Ragi Banana and Dates Smoothie is that the Ragi should be cooked thoroughly and lump-free. It would take just 5-7 mins on slow to medium heat. And for chocolate lovers like me believe me, you will not miss the chocolate in this. So give this Ragi Banana and Dates Smoothie a try, make it for parties or pack it for your office lunch and let me know how it turned out.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp finger millet flour ragi flour
- 1 big banana chopped
- 4 pitted dates (I used soft wet dates) so I do not have to soak them, if you are using the dry ones soak them in hot water for 15-20 mins
- 1 cup milk (Vegans can use substitutions)
Instructions
- In a pot add 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup water, and ragi powder.
- Give everything a quick mix.
- Bring the mixture to a boil on medium to slow stirring in between, to avoid any lumps.
- Keep aside and let it cool so that you are able to handle it in a blender.
- In a blender jar, add banana, dates, and remaining 1/2 cup milk.
- Blend to smooth and then add the ragi and milk mixture. Blend again until well combined.
- Serve Warm.

My go to quick and filling smoothie. I usually prepare a big batch of the ragi and keep it in the fridge. Easier to add fruits , milk and whizz it. Love ragi banana and date smoothie as it is so filling and naturally sweet.
