Makar Sankranti – The festival

Makar Sankranti is a festival in the Hindu calendar, observed in January each year. It marks the sun’s transit into Makara and marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days. Makar Sankranti is celebrated in many parts of Indian Subcontinent with regional variations.

In our House Makar Sankranti is celebrated the North Indian way. It is done by all by distributing dry khichadi to the Brahmins or the needy ones. Dal, Rice, Gud, Ghee, sesame seeds are being given to the needy ones by each one from the house. Married women distribute some unique and a different item each year to 14 other women.

In Maharashtra, people exchange multicoloured halwa (sugar granules) or til-gul ladoo. Gul Poli | Tilgul Poli | Jaggery and Sesame seeds stuffed Indian flatbread is being made for lunch. While exchanging til gul people greet each other as “Til gul ghyaa, aani goad goad bola”. Means, accept this Til gul and talk sweet. Being born and brought up in Maharashtra, have very fond memories of celebrating this in this way.

Til and Gul

Til and Gul , i.e. Sesame seeds and Jaggery are the most commonly consumed foods during winters. They help to keep your body warm and also increases the immunity at the same time. The natural oil present in til helps to keep the body warm , while the Jaggery provides the iron content.

Til gul ladoo is one of my favourites and I can gobble 2-3 at a time :D. My mom makes the one with mava too and I simply miss them. It used to be one of my favourites. I add times make this simple Til Gud and Sunflower Seeds Papdi and love to have it as my mini treat after lunch or dinner.

The taste of this simple Til gul ladoo without Jaggery Syrup is much similar to the mava ones. One bite and I was already reaching out for the second one. The best thing about this recipe is that it does not have any sugar syrup to be made. Ghee is not needed at all in this, but my mixture was a bit dry and it was difficult to bind it. So I added a teaspoon of ghee and was able to form ladoos. After all ghee is another winter warmer food.
