Buttery Spiced Apple Sauce With Jaggery

Fresh apples, butter, and jaggery can become a rich, caramel-like sauce in about 15 minutes. This homemade caramel apple sauce brings together tender fruit, milk, and warm spices for a small-batch treat you can spoon onto toast or save for baking.

You can leave it slightly chunky or blend it smooth, depending on how you plan to serve it. Start with the ingredients below, then let the apples' tenderness guide your cooking time.

Homemade Caramel Apple Sauce: Ingredients and Easy Swaps

Gather everything before heating the pan, especially the milk and spices, so they're ready when the jaggery starts melting.

IngredientAmount
Apples2 large or 3 medium, about 260 grams prepared
Butter3 tablespoons
Jaggery1 cup
MilkEnough to mix into the sauce smoothly
CinnamonTo taste
NutmegFreshly grated, to taste
SaltA pinch
Lemon juiceTo finish, to taste

Choose apples and prepare them for cooking

Both green and red apples work. Green apples generally bring a sharper flavor, while sweeter red varieties give the sauce a gentler fruitiness.

Wash and peel the apples, then remove the cores and roughly chop the flesh. Start with about 260 grams of prepared apples. Keep the pieces reasonably similar in size so they soften evenly; large chunks will take longer than small ones.

What jaggery, butter, and spices bring to the sauce

Jaggery gives the sauce its deep, caramel-like sweetness, while butter adds richness. Sugar can replace jaggery, although the finished flavor will be different.

Cinnamon and freshly grated nutmeg add warmth without needing to dominate the apples. Meanwhile, milk helps the mixture come together, and a pinch of salt balances the sweetness. Lemon juice adds brightness at the end.

This recipe contains dairy because it uses butter and milk. It's also a sweetened sauce rather than plain, unsweetened applesauce.

How to Make Caramel Apple Sauce in About 15 Minutes

Melt the butter in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped apples and jaggery, then stir to coat the fruit.

Cook over medium heat, stirring now and then, until the jaggery begins to melt. Keep an eye on the bottom of the pan; lower the heat if the mixture starts catching.

Next, stir in the cinnamon and milk. Add the milk gradually, using enough to mix everything smoothly rather than pouring in a large amount at once. Follow with freshly grated nutmeg and a pinch of salt.

Continue cooking until the apples are soft. About 15 minutes is a useful estimate, but apple variety, chop size, and stove heat all affect timing.

Make it chunky or blend it smooth

Check a piece of apple with a fork before mashing or blending. It should yield easily; firm pieces need more cooking.

For a thick, rustic sauce, use a potato masher and leave small pieces throughout. This texture works well spooned onto toast or roti.

For a smoother finish, use an immersion blender. Keep its head submerged to limit splashes, and handle the hot mixture carefully. Blend until the texture suits you, checking for any remaining firm pieces.

Finish with lemon and cool safely

Turn off the heat before adding the lemon juice. Stir in a little, then taste carefully once a spoonful is cool enough. The lemon should brighten the rich sweetness without overpowering the sauce.

Let the caramel apple sauce cool briefly before transferring it to a clean, airtight container. Then refrigerate it once completely cooled.

Ways to Serve, Store, and Bake With Apple Sauce

Spoon the sauce onto warm toast for an easy breakfast or afternoon snack. Its buttery sweetness also pairs nicely with roti, including homemade Khapli wheat roti. Spread a modest amount first, then add more to suit your taste.

The chunky version makes a satisfying topping because you get little pieces of apple in each bite. Meanwhile, a smooth batch is easier to spread thinly or mix evenly into a batter. Choose the texture before storing, especially if you're saving some for baking.

Save some for cakes and pancakes

I've used this apple sauce to make eggless Khapli wheat cake and oat pancakes. If you're planning either, set aside some sauce before serving the rest with breakfast. (Recipe coming soon)

Because this batch already contains jaggery, butter, and milk, consider those ingredients when adding it to baked goods. It brings sweetness and moisture, along with apple flavor.

Use a recipe's stated amount when one is available. Don't assume this sauce replaces eggs or oil in every cake or pancake recipe. Batter consistency and sweetness matter, so a direct swap can change the result.

Refrigerate the cooled sauce

Store the cooled sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use it promptly. Use a clean spoon each time, and return the container to the fridge after serving.

This recipe doesn't include a tested canning process, so don't treat the finished sauce as a shelf-stable food.

Lemon juice brightens the flavor, but adding it doesn't make this butter-and-milk sauce suitable for pantry storage.

A Warmly Spiced Sauce Worth Keeping Handy

A few everyday ingredients turn fresh apples into a rich, warmly spiced sauce in about 15 minutes. Let tender apples guide the timing, then choose a chunky or smooth finish.

Enjoy it with toast or roti, and save some for eggless Khapli wheat cake or oats pancakes. Refrigerate what remains promptly.
