Easy Chunky Avocado Guacamole is a dip, spread or a salad which is made using Avocado, Tomato, Onion and a few other ingredients. The salsa or the dip is perfect with some chips, nachos, pita bread, crackers or can be enjoyed as is.
What is Guacamole
Guacamole basically means a sauce or a dip made using Avocado. Traditionally the dip consists of Avocado, salt, lemon juice, cilantro and Jalapenos. However with fusions and changes now, there are a lot of additions to this. Additions like tomatoes, onion, pepper, peas etc. are common.
At times I make the traditional Guacamole that is only with Avocado, Salt, Lemon Juice and pepper. And this recipe of mine which I had posted in March 2015 had only that. I spread this on my bread or crackers and enjoy it as my morning breakfast or snacks.
Now at times I do add tomatoes and onion to make it more like salsa, which can be enjoyed with nacho chips or pita bread. It becomes a bit of a healthy and a filling evening snack for my kids and us.
Avocado, the main ingredient of this recipe, is a fruit that is rich in healthy fats. Likely originated from south-central Mexico. The fruit , Avocado is botanically a large berry containing a single seed.
Choosing and cutting an Avocado
It is difficult to understand for beginners when an avocado is ripe. If you cut an unripe Avocado it would be a waste. Do not worry. Recipes with Avocado
As naturally rich in fat it is a good substitute for butter. I love to make this Whole Wheat Avocado Banana Muffins or this Avocado Chocolate Mousse and this No Bake Avocado Cheesecake. All these recipes are healthy treats which use avocado as the main ingredient or as a substitute for butter. These are also either processed sugar free or natural sugars are being used.
One can also make a refreshing and a filling drink with Avocado like in this Indian Style Avocado Lassi or Avocado Yogurt Smoothie. And if you want something light yet creamy try this Raw Watermelon Rind and Avocado Salad, which is oil-free and perfect for summers.
Ingredients used in Chunky Avocado Guacamole
I have used Avocado, chopped tomato, onion, lemon juice, salt and crushed black pepper. I have not used any garlic as at times the raw flavour of garlic overpowers every other thing. One can add if needed. Crushed Black pepper can be substituted with Jalapenos or green chillies to your liking too.
Storing Avocado Guacamole
It is best to consume this salad or salsa immediately as Avocado turns brown due to oxidation. If at all required, one can refrigerate in an airtight container.
Quantity of Guacamole with 2 Avocados
I have used 2 Avocados here and it should be sufficient for 4 people to be enjoyed with some pita bread or chips.
Easy Chunky Avocado Guacamole
- Fork / Spoon
- 2 Ripe Avocados
- 1 small tomato de-seeded and chopped (around ¼ Cup)
- ½-1 small onion chopped (around ¼ Cup)
- 2 tablespoon lemon juice
- Crushed Black Pepper to taste
- 1-2 tablespoon of Coriander chopped
- Salt to taste
- Peel the Avocado.
- In a bowl mash the avocados with a fork or the back of the spoon.
- De-seed and chop the tomato.
- Chop the onion.
- Add the chopped tomato, onion, lemon juice , salt, black pepper and coriander.
- Mix everything and enjoy.
- 1 Cup = 235 ml, 1 tbsp= 15 ml, 1 tsp = 5 ml
- One can skip the onion and tomato and make it as a spread with only lemon, salt and pepper
- Garlic can be added
- Jalapenos or fresh green chillies can be added
- Sweet Pepper / Capsicum can be added
