Bread is one of the most integral part of every household all over the world. There are different types of bread’s being baked and many customs or traditions attached to this bread. One such is Good Luck Bread. Being in Ireland I decided to use the Irish good luck symbol, and baked this Four Leaf Clover Good Luck Rolls.
A Little About Good Luck Breads
One of the oldest tradition in the world is from Greece, a special bread called vasilopita, which means Saint Basil’s Bread, is baked with a coin hidden in it. This bread is shared with family and friends and whoever gets the slice with the coin, has good luck for the rest of the year. Irish have a unusual tradition of banging the walls of the house with bread as a way of chasing away bad luck and evil spirits.
Why this Bread
The theme of this month’s Bread Baker’s is Good Luck Bread’s, hosted by Felice Geoghegan from All that left are Crumb’s. She asked us to bake some Good Luck Bread’s which bring good fortune throughout the year or shaped as a good luck symbol. To be honest, I was not even aware if such a thing exist. When she announced the theme, I was like what is this. A quick google search and I was fascinated by different traditions followed all over the world. Thank you Felice, for hosting such a wonderful theme and helping us learn more.
So what is Four Leaf Clover
I did not bake any traditional Good Luck bread but decided to use the Irish good luck symbol, 4 Leaf Clover. Yes I know Irish Shamrock is the 3 Leaf Clover, But the four-leaf clover is a rare variation of the common three-leaf clover. According to traditional superstition, such clovers bring good luck.
What Ingredients I used and How I baked
So I decided to make them in the shape of rolls or muffins. I did not wanted to bake a big size as was not sure if the shape will remain intact. I saw a few recipes and they used ramekin moulds. I just had 3, so I used my muffin tin. I used the recipe from here with few modifications. I have used a combination of All purpose flour and Wholemeal flour which has a very rough texture. I was sure my rolls will not puff up much. But I was amazed. They came out really well, looked so cute with that clover symbol on the top and looked like a muffin. The texture of the breads was just wow. We had this as a side along with our Vegetable Pasta Bake (Recipe Coming soon), and we just loved it. I have even freezed around 4-5 rolls for later use. I even baked one 3 Leaf clover , Pic attached below.
So here goes the recipe:
Ingredients
- 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour / Plain Flour / Maida
- 1 Cup Wholemeal Flour
- 1 tsp Salt
- 2 tbsp Honey
- 2 tbsp Soft Unsalted butter
- 1 Cup lukewarm water
- 2 tsp instant yeast
- 2 tbsp butter for greasing the molds
- 2 tbsp melted butter, (optional – for glossy finish on the top)
Instructions
- In a large bowl or the bowl of your stand mixer, sieve all the dry ingredients.
- Add in the Honey and give it a quick mix.
- Knead the dough with hand or your stand mixer, slowly incorporating the 2 tbsp butter.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it.
- Let the dough rest for 60-90 minutes, until puffy.
- Grease the ramekin molds or your muffin tray with butter.
- Gently deflate the dough and divide the dough into equal size pieces around 8.
- Then roll each of them into long cylindrical shape.
- Cut around 3/4 inch of the dough, and roll them into small balls.
- Place the four balls into each of the ramekins or the cavity of the muffin tray (See Pic below)
- Cover them with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for 45-75 minutes, until they have crested over the rims of the ramekins or the muffin tray.
- Preheat the oven to 180 Deg C
- Bake the rolls in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until they are golden brown.
- Brush the rolls with the melted butter, and let them cool for 5 minutes in the ramekins or muffin tray.
- Remove them out on a cooling rack.
- Serve warm with some butter, or at room temperature.
Notes
- Baking times and temperature vary as all Oven’s vary and you are a better judge of your oven.
