Coriander Powder

One of the essential spices in Indian cooking, fresh homemade dhaniya powder or coriander powder adds a unique taste, and texture to your food. Easy to make and budget-friendly when you make it at home.

Dhaniya powder or coriander powder is made from coriander seeds. Coriander seeds and coriander powder are both used in Indian cooking. Whole or lightly crushed coriander seeds are added to many recipes.

Dhaniya powder adds a nice taste as well as texture to the recipe. I like to grind it coarsely and not to a fine powder. This helps in even giving that nice coating to the food as well as adds a little body or texture.

Mom’s Coriander Powder recipe

This is my mom’s recipe and to date, I always use this. I never liked store-bought coriander powder. It lacks the texture of the one prepared at home. I have used the store-bought in one or two dishes and it never tasted the same. It really lacks the flavor. Even a powder with simple coriander seeds I would say best is to make it at home.

For the last few years, I have been making a lot of masalas or powders at home now. Once you start making it you will not go back to the store again. What do I add to Homemade Coriander Powder?

Typically Dhaniya powder is made only using coriander seeds. But I like to add a few spices along with this coriander powder. Elevates the spice powder, makes it unique, and by default, you are adding some spices to your recipes which enhances the taste.

Peppercorns

I like to add some black peppercorns, cinnamon, and a few curry leaves. Peppercorns add some heat to the spice and are good for your health too.

Curry Leaves

Curry leaves typically people discard when added in a tempering. This is a nice way to sneak in those healthy leaves. It helps in digestion, weight loss, keeps diabetes under check, hair repair

Cinnamon

Cinnamon has its own benefits. All in all this coriander powder is unique and has its own health benefits.

Of course, if you do not want these additional ingredients simply skip it and make a powder of only the seeds.

Roasting or not roasting Homemade Coriander Powder

I like to roast the dhania seeds a little to remove the moisture as well as to add a nutty taste. One can skip this. If you are not roasting it, it will taste a bit milder. Be sure that you are using moisture-free dhaniya seeds or else the powder will go rancid.

Shelf life of Coriander Powder

Typically spices can stay good for 1 year or more if you are keeping in proper hygiene conditions. However, when making any spice powder it is advised to make it in small batches, as one loses the aroma or the spice. I generally make a small batch enough for 2-3 months and then make another one. This way I have it fresh always.

I too make all the spice mix at home as they are more flavoursome. Would love to try this version with added spices and curry leaf. It must be giving a good aroma.

I totally agree with you that home made spice mixtures are so much better. Not only are they full of flavour but fresh too. In the Gujarati cuisine we use coriander and cumin mixture in almost all the dishes. Like your coriander powder with added spices. Will be trying out a small batch.

My mom also makes it in quite similar way. She also adds cumin to it. Store bought powder is just plain coriander and lacks flavor.

Even I hate the store bought coriander powder. It lacks the flavor. Your version with all the spices and curry leaves look amazing.
