Today I am sharing a famous recipe from Andhra Pradesh made using Black-eyed Pea. Black-eyed Pea Fritters is famous as a healthy snack as it is flour less and made only using protein and fiber rich Black-eyed Peas, onion, green chilli and coriander. A popular street food in Andhra Pradesh and is during the festive’s.

A little about Black-eyed Pea

The black-eyed pea is a subspecies of the cowpea, grown around the world for its medium-sized, edible bean. It is rich in proteins, helps in digestion and aids in weight loss. Black-eyed peas is called as lobai or rongi in North India. It is cooked similar to dal and served with rice or roti. Chawali is famous, in Maharashtra and a curry is made using it. In Karnataka they are called alsande kalu and used in the preparation of huli, a popular type of curry. Similarly it is popular across India and has a lot of recipes attached to it.

I have been making this black-eyed pea as a gravy similar to dal or I mix it into different beans and lentils to make this Mix Lentils Pancakes. To be honest I am not a big fan of this Black-eyed pea. So when I saw the recipe of this black-eyed pea vada on Pavani’s blog, I immediately shortlisted it.

The Challenge

For this month’s challenge of Food Blogger Recipe Swap Club I was assigned to create a recipe from Pavani Gunikuntala blog Pavani’s Kitchen. In this group we are assigned a partner from who’s blog we need to make a recipe. I decided to make her Alasandalu Vada/Black-Eyed Pea Fritters. Black-eyed Pea Fritters


This Black-eyed pea fritters are very easy to make and are super crunchy and very delicious. They are made with a very few ingredients available at home like curry leaves, onion, green chilly, coriander, ginger, cumin and salt. I would say the main taste in this comes from the chopped curry leaves and coriander. The Vada’s turned out to be very light and crunchy. The best way to enjoy them is piping hot. They can be served as a side to your main meal too.


Black-eyed Pea Fritters | Chawali | Lobia Vada

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Black-Eyed Pea/Chawli/Lobia
  • 1 Cup Finely chopped onion
  • Green chillies chopped -4 (as per taste)
  • 8-10 curry leaves roughly chopped or teared
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 inch Finely chopped ginger
  • 1 cup Coriander leaves chopped
  • Salt as per taste
  • Oil for deep frying

Instructions

  • Soak the Black-Eyed Pea/Chawli/Lobia in enough water overnight or for atleast 6-7 hours.
  • Drain the water from the soaked Black-eyed pea/Chawli/Lobia and give it a rinse.
  • Add the soaked Black-eyed pea/Chawli/Lobia in a blender along with green chillies and grind into a coarse paste.
  • Do not add water or else the batter will get runny. Add only a teaspoon at a time, if required at all.
  • Transfer the paste into a bowl.
  • Add chopped onions, roughly chopped curry leaves, chopped ginger along with salt.
  • Combine everything and mix well.
  • Heat oil in a large wok on medium flame.
  • Take a lemon size batter into the hand.
  • Flatten it into your palm or with your fingers.
  • Make a small hole in the centre and drop slowly in the oil.
  • Fry on medium heat until golden brown on both the colours.
  • Repeat the process for the remaining batter.
  • Enjoy yummy and crispy Black-eyed pea fritters / Chawli or Lobai vada hot.
