Open-Faced Celery Avocado Sandwich is a refreshing and healthy sandwich with the goodness of celery and avocado.
These sandwiches can be done within minutes and are perfect for your breakfast or great as an appetizer for your parties. They are no-cook sandwiches if you have the bread handy.
Why Open face sandwich?
I prefer these sandwiches as open-faced sandwiches as it has a mix of avocado, celery, and cream cheese. Celery might release water and hence I do not like to make it as a normal sandwich. The other reason is that these sandwiches look cute when they are open-faced. The mixture of avocado, cheese, and celery looks more appetizing with some herbs sprinkled on it.
What is an Open-faced sandwich?
Open-faced sandwich or open sandwich or tartine are sandwiches which has a bread slice at the bottom. They are topped with fruits, veggies, or meat. Smørrebrød is a traditional open-faced sandwich from the Scandinavian region. It usually consists of rye bread topped with cold cuts of meat or fish, cheese, spreads, etc.
I like to top my sandwiches with different things. I just experiment and if I have an extra slice of bread or am craving bread I top it with different veggies, jams, chutneys, etc. Adding veggies to the sandwiches makes it a complete meal and you feel less guilty 🙂
I got the idea to make this Open-Faced Celery Avocado Sandwich when I was making this oil-free Avocado Stuffed Celery Sticks. I love the stuffing so for this celery sticks so much that I made it again, but this time I added a little cream cheese to my avocado and celery mix.
The cream cheese added a more creamy texture to the sandwich. There is no need for any additional butter or spread butter on the bread slices as avocado is already creamy and a good replacement for butter. Next cheese too adds a creamy texture. Green chilies and chives give a nice kick, flavor, and texture to the mixture.
I am using my Sprouted Wheat Flour No Knead Bread for this recipe. One can however use any store brought bread. I would recommend using some nut and seed bread or sourdough bread as it will add a nice crunch to the sandwich.
Sandwich Recipes
I love to make sandwiches. They are good for breakfast, to pack in your lunchbox or carry as a picnic food. Can be served for parties as an appetizers. I love this Aloo Toast Sandwich or Potato Toast sandwich which doubles as a finger food or a grab and go sandwich. A simple filling sandwich loaded with spicy potato mixture.
And if you are looking for some healthy sandwich bites, try this Zucchini and Carrot Vegetable sandwich or this Beetroot and Carrot Sandwich. Both sandwiches can be served as an open sandwich or a closed one. Another refreshing sandwiches with fresh garden veggies.
Recipe process Open-Faced Celery Avocado Sandwich
I call this a 5 min no-cook recipe. All you do is peel and cut the avocado. Mash the avocado and grate or chop the celery sticks finely. Add lemon juice, chives, green chilies, cream cheese, and salt. Mix everything. Toast the bread slices if required. Top the bread slices with the mixture and garnish with some more chives.
Serving for parties or for breakfast
For serving it as an appetizer for parties, I like to cut it in half or quarters. This helps in enjoying individual and small portions. For breakfast or a meal, I prefer the full slice.
Can we make this Open-Faced Celery Avocado Sandwich ahead of time?
The filling can be made ahead of time, but since it has avocado in it at times it might get discolored. So as it literally takes 5 mins, I would suggest making this just before you need it. Making it 30-60 minutes and refrigerating is a good idea. This will even help the stuffing gets cold and it would taste better. Top the stuffing on the bread slices just before serving or 10-15 minutes before serving or else the bread might go soggy.
Dietary Recommendations
As I am using creme cheese this is not vegan. Vegans can skip the cream cheese or use vegan cheese or maybe cashew paste. Another thing is you might need to use Vegan bread. For gluten-free use gluten-free bread, and check the ingredients for cream cheese if it is 100 percent gluten-free.
Replacements
One can replace the green chilly with black pepper or red paprika powder. Chives can be skipped entirely or they can be replaced with parsley or coriander.
